Smruti | स्मृति | Summary In English

The story is about an Incident in the writer’s childhood Writer was afraid of his elder brother. Once he risked his life by going inside a snake’s well! Writer is called home while he was playing. He is afraid he will get some beating from elder brother. His brother gives him 3 letters post at Makhanpur Post Office. Writer and his younger brother take their walking sticks and go.

Writer keeps the letters inside his cap on his head. They had gone 4 furlongs (800 meters). Reached a waterless incomplete well where lived a big black snake. While going to school, writer and his friends used to throw lumps of soil in the well to listen to the snake hiss. This time also he threw handful of soil. While doing so the 3 letters fell in the well. Both of them started crying.

They decide that the writer will enter the well. Dhoti & rope with sticks at both ends was used to enter the well. The snake was waiting with its hood open. There was no place to swing the stick and kill the snake. 2 letters were lying near the snake. One letter was lying near the writer. The snake bit the writer’s stick 3 times. Younger brother screamed loudly! The tail of the snake touched the writer’s hand. Snake & Writer’s positions got exchanged.

The writer picked up the letters. The writer aged 11 had to climb up 36 feet with his hands. The writer and his brother rested and then continued the journey. One of writer’s friend had seen him climb up the well. After Writer had passed Class 10 he told his mother. His mother was shaken & took him in her lap.
